RC Lens prepares summer transfer window despite Pierre Sage's surprise departure
After Pierre Sage's unexpected resignation, RC Lens is pressing ahead with its summer transfer window with several departures confirmed — including Saint-Maximin to Charlotte in MLS — and recruits already secured, including Thorgan Hazard.
RC Lens is entering its summer transfer window without a head coach: Pierre Sage, who had announced he wanted to stay, ultimately left his post, leaving Jean-Louis Leca and the Lens sporting director to manage the first weeks of recruitment alone.
On the departures front, several deals are already done. Allan Saint-Maximin has joined Charlotte in Major League Soccer, Wesley Saïd has signed with a Qatar club, and Adrien Thomasson has joined Stade Rennais. Mamadou Sangaré and Malang Sarr are also expected to leave the club in the coming weeks.
The Sang et Or have, however, secured several players for next season. Lens exercised its purchase option on Saud Abdulhamid, whose loan from AS Roma thus becomes a permanent transfer. Thorgan Hazard, a product of the club’s academy, will make his return to Bollaert, and Rémy Labeau-Lascary will return from his loan at Brest.
According to Foot Mercato, the Artois club intends to replicate last year’s transfer strategy: no extravagant spending, but an active search for good opportunities at all positions. Lens scouts would not rule out pulling off a major coup, comparable to Florian Thauvin’s arrival last summer.
The constraint is real: qualified directly for the Ligue des Champions thanks to their second-place finish in Ligue 1, Lens will need to strengthen their squad with enough depth to compete on multiple fronts, and this before even knowing the name of their future head coach.
