Rashford's unresolved future complicates Man United's £124m summer transfer plans
Manchester United have agreed a £39m deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson and remain in talks over West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, but Marcus Rashford's uncertain future is reportedly hindering their pursuit of left-side reinforcements.
Marcus Rashford’s unresolved future at Manchester United is reportedly complicating the club’s summer transfer business, with United in discussions that could take their total spending to around £124m.
United have already agreed a deal worth up to £38.8m — £35m initial fee plus £3.8m in add-ons — to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, marking their first confirmed signing of the window. Attention has now turned to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, a 21-year-old Portugal international who has attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain. West Ham are reported to value Fernandes at around £85m, and while United remain in talks with the London club, they have yet to submit a formal offer.
According to the Daily Mail, Rashford’s situation has “complicated” United’s pursuit of reinforcements on the left side of the forward line. The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Barcelona, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists, but the La Liga club chose not to activate a permanent purchase clause worth £26m. Barcelona have since signed Anthony Gordon on a permanent deal for around £69m and are reportedly open to taking Rashford on loan again — an arrangement United are unwilling to sanction.
With Rashford contracted at Old Trafford until 2028, his next destination remains unclear, and that uncertainty appears to be holding up United’s planning for the left-forward position. West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville has also been mentioned as a potential target, though no significant progress on that front has been reported.
Should United finalise deals for both Ederson and Fernandes, their summer outlay could reach approximately £124m — a significant commitment as the club looks to reshape the squad ahead of the new season. Whether Rashford’s situation is resolved before those negotiations conclude remains the key variable.
