Rashford's Barcelona loan ends without permanent deal as Man Utd weigh permanent sale

Marcus Rashford’s season-long loan at Barcelona has ended without a permanent move materialising, after the Spanish club opted not to trigger their £26m purchase option, leaving the England forward’s club future unresolved as he continues at the 2026 World Cup.

Rashford made 49 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists — a respectable return — but the club ultimately decided to direct their transfer budget elsewhere. The arrival of Anthony Gordon for £70m shifted Barcelona’s attacking priorities, closing the door on any permanent deal at Camp Nou.

With the loan now expired, Rashford is officially due to return to Manchester United. The club have made clear they will not entertain further loan arrangements and will only sanction a permanent departure for the 28-year-old. He is expected to report to United’s training ground for pre-season preparations shortly after England’s World Cup campaign concludes in North America.

Speculation linking Rashford to Bayern Munich has cooled considerably. The German champions have turned their attention to PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ismael Saibari, effectively removing themselves from the race for the United forward.

At Old Trafford, manager Michael Carrick has stopped short of ruling Rashford out of his plans. Carrick has indicated he is open to reintegrating the academy graduate into the first-team setup and has confirmed no final decision on his future has been reached, keeping the possibility of a fresh start alive under the current coaching staff.

For now, Rashford’s focus remains on England’s World Cup campaign. His next club destination is expected to become clearer once he returns from North America next month, with United holding firm on their demand for a permanent fee.
