Rashford warned only Real Madrid can meet his wage demands after Barcelona loan
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has cautioned Marcus Rashford that his transfer options are narrowing fast, arguing that only Real Madrid can realistically match the Manchester United forward's salary expectations after Barcelona moved to sign Anthony Gordon instead.
Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United remains unresolved after his season-long loan at Barcelona, with former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin warning the 28-year-old that his financial demands are eliminating most potential suitors.
Rashford delivered a productive campaign at the Catalan club, registering double figures in both goals and assists under Hansi Flick. A permanent deal had appeared plausible, with Barcelona holding a purchase option worth around £26 million, but their £69.3 million acquisition of Anthony Gordon and continued pursuit of Julián Álvarez have cast serious doubt over whether they can also fund a move for the United forward.
Nevin, speaking to Grosvenor Casinos, argued that Rashford’s wage level — described as “staggering” — drastically limits the pool of clubs willing to sign him. “If I was advising Marcus Rashford I’d tell him to stop being obsessed with money and cut a deal to stay at Manchester United because that’s where he belongs,” Nevin said, though he acknowledged doubts over whether a return to Old Trafford is realistic given that each of the previous two United managers sent Rashford out on loan.
“I don’t know if Barca can really keep on paying all the money,” Nevin continued. “Real Madrid can. Nobody else can really pay a staggering amount for a player who has got a checkered background. Someone like Chelsea wouldn’t buy him because they buy younger players and it’s all about sales there. So, you’re kind of limiting the teams you can go to.”
Nevin suggested that Spain suits Rashford from a lifestyle standpoint, which could make Real Madrid a natural fit if the England international is unwilling to reduce his salary expectations. Aston Villa have also been mentioned as a possibility, contingent on Rashford accepting lower terms. He contributed four goals and six assists across 17 appearances during a loan spell at Villa Park under Unai Emery in the 2024/25 season.
The former Chelsea midfielder urged Rashford to prioritise consistent playing time over financial reward, framing the coming weeks as a pivotal moment in the forward’s career. Whether Rashford heeds that advice — or holds out for a move that matches his current United contract — will likely determine where he plays his football next season.
