Rashford thanks Carragher for defending him as Barcelona loan move collapses
Marcus Rashford has publicly thanked Jamie Carragher on X after the Liverpool legend pushed back against Gary Neville's repeated focus on the forward. Rashford is set to remain at Manchester United for 2026/27 after Barcelona declined to trigger his £26m purchase clause.
Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United for the 2026/27 season after Barcelona chose not to activate the £26 million purchase clause in his loan agreement, instead signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. The 27-year-old, who had appeared destined to leave Old Trafford permanently, is now expected to stay with the club for the remainder of his contract.
The situation prompted debate on The Overlap podcast, where Gary Neville attempted to raise Rashford’s name only to be cut off by Jamie Carragher. “Can we do a podcast without mentioning Rashford? Stop it,” Carragher said. “He’s just a good player for Man United!” Responding to a clip of the exchange on X, Rashford wrote: “Thanks, Jamie. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day.”
Rashford’s £325,000-a-week wages have been cited as a significant barrier to any permanent transfer, with no club willing to match his salary. His history under former manager Ruben Amorim added further scrutiny to his situation, but new United head coach Michael Carrick has welcomed him back to Carrington following a post-World Cup break.
Carrick has been openly positive about Rashford’s reintegration. “He’s a very good player, and I think if you’re going to have a career over 10 or 15 years, there’s going to be times when things go in a different direction,” the United boss said. “Now we’re in a positive place as a group, and Marcus can offer us so much. He has done, and he can do again, so in that respect, it’s quite exciting.”
Carrick added that Rashford had trained well since returning and that his familiarity with the player was an asset. “I’ve known him a long time, so I don’t treat him any different to anybody else, but it’s been good to have him around the group again.”
With just under two weeks of the transfer window remaining, Rashford looks set to feature in United’s Premier League opener against newly-promoted Hull City. He has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford.
