Raúl ‘Tala’ Rangel’s instinctive 87th-minute double save preserved Mexico’s 1-0 victory over South Korea on Thursday, making El Tri the first team to advance from the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The result gave Mexico top spot in Group A at the tournament they are co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

With the match in the balance, Rangel first smothered a close-range header from Cho Gue-sung before immediately extending his right arm to block Yang Hyun-jun’s rebound attempt. The collision sent Rangel tumbling to the ground, but his hand was perfectly positioned to keep the ball from crossing the line.

“It was very quick, it was pure reaction,” Rangel said. “I couldn’t really tell you what I saw, because I remember the moment of impact with my teammate and me having the ball. But I think I was really focused, I came through when the team needed me, and I’m happy about that.”

The 26-year-old was only in the starting lineup because of an injury earlier this year to Luis Ángel Malagón, Mexico’s expected first-choice goalkeeper. Coach Javier Aguirre expressed no hesitation about turning to Rangel when it mattered most.

“He showed me a lot of determination ever since we called him up for the first time,” Aguirre said. “He played very well for his team this season.”

Rangel plays his club football for Chivas, the Guadalajara-based side that traditionally fields only Mexican players. His home ground, Estadio Akron, is one of the World Cup’s host venues — a detail that adds a local dimension to his breakthrough moment on the global stage. Luis Romo, who scored the only goal of the game, is also a Chivas player.

With Mexico through as group winners, attention now turns to the knockout rounds, where Rangel will look to build on a performance that transformed him from a late call-up into one of the tournament’s early talking points.
