Ramsdale confirmed as Southampton's fourth-choice keeper after failed summer exit

Aaron Ramsdale has been confirmed as Southampton’s fourth-choice goalkeeper after the 28-year-old failed to find a new club before the summer transfer deadline, with Saints manager Tonda Eckert publicly committing to Daniel Peretz, George Long, and training goalkeeper Jamie Jones ahead of him in the pecking order.

Ramsdale joined Southampton in 2024 after losing his starting place at Arsenal to David Raya, but his time on the South Coast has brought little relief. He was relegated with the club in his debut campaign and spent last season on loan at Newcastle, making just 12 appearances. A permanent or loan exit this summer appeared likely, but he remains at St Mary’s under contract until 2028.

“The reality is that Rambo’s story at the football club has started before I came in,” Eckert said. “We’ve had honest conversations from the very first day of pre-season to the last day of the transfer window and he’s still a part of the group. The expectations for him are clear — to support the team in the best way — and he’s been very professional in doing that so far.”

Eckert was unambiguous about the hierarchy. “Me and the club have made a clear commitment to Daniel as our number one and that stands. I think he deserves that off the back of some brilliant performances last season. My commitment to Longy as number two stands as well.”

The Southampton boss did acknowledge Ramsdale on a personal note, confirming the goalkeeper had recently become a father for the second time.

A move away is not entirely ruled out. Transfer windows in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Portugal remain open, giving Ramsdale a narrow opportunity to seek first-team football elsewhere in the coming weeks.

Ramsdale began his career at Sheffield United before spells at Bournemouth and a return to Bramall Lane, prior to his move to Arsenal where he made 89 appearances across all competitions.

Southampton, meanwhile, have made an encouraging start to the Championship season under Eckert, collecting seven points from their opening four games despite beginning the campaign with a four-point deduction.
