Raheem Sterling was arrested on Thursday morning after crashing his Lamborghini into barriers on the M3 southbound near the Minley Interchange. Hampshire Police confirmed the former England winger, 31, has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

In a statement, Hampshire Police said officers received reports of the single-vehicle collision just before 9am. “No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported,” the force said. “The driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue.”

Sterling, capped 82 times by England, has had a turbulent few years both on and off the pitch. After winning four Premier League titles with Manchester City, he moved to Chelsea in 2022 but managed only two seasons at Stamford Bridge before being loaned to Arsenal, where he scored once in 28 appearances.

Chelsea terminated his contract in January 2025, and Sterling subsequently joined Dutch club Feyenoord. His spell there proved equally difficult — he made just eight appearances without scoring before departing.

Feyenoord manager Robin van Persie defended Sterling following his final appearance for the club. “Personally, I struggle with the cynicism surrounding him — I think respect is more appropriate,” Van Persie said. “He has scored 200 goals in England and played 82 international matches. The way we handle this as a footballing nation is really very bad.”

Sterling began his career at Liverpool before establishing himself as one of England’s most prominent attackers during his time at Manchester City. He has not been convicted of any offence, and police have stated that investigations are ongoing.
