Racing Santander crowned Segunda champions as Mirandes drop on final day
Racing Santander claimed the Segunda División title with a thumping win over Cadiz on the final matchday, while Mirandes were relegated after a 1-0 defeat at Leganes. The play-off semi-final pairings are now set, with Castellon facing Almeria and Las Palmas taking on Malaga.
Racing Santander were crowned Segunda División champions on Matchday 42 after thrashing Cadiz, while Mirandes were confirmed as the final relegated side following a 1-0 loss at Leganes — a result that settled the last remaining questions of the 2025-26 season.
The Cantabrian club had already secured promotion two games earlier, but the title race with Deportivo La Coruña went to the wire. Deportivo, who had sealed their own top-flight return last weekend, fell to a 2-1 defeat against Las Palmas on the final day, handing Racing the championship by two points.
Play-off picture settled by final-day results
The promotion play-off places were equally dramatic to resolve. Almeria finished third on 74 points after Sergio Arribas — the division’s top scorer with 25 goals — netted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Real Valladolid. Malaga secured fourth with a 2-0 victory over already-relegated Real Zaragoza in Aragon.
Las Palmas clinched fifth spot with their win over Deportivo, a result that proved decisive in keeping Burgos out of the play-offs despite their 1-0 victory over Andorra. Castellon took sixth place on 72 points — level with Burgos but ahead on results — after their own victory was enough to edge out Eibar, who had entered the day with an outside chance.
The semi-final draw sees Castellon host Almeria in the first leg on 6 June at 21:00 CEST, with the return on 9 June at the same time. Las Palmas will host Malaga on 7 June at 21:00 CEST, with the second leg on 10 June. The final is scheduled across 14 and 20 June.
Mirandes relegated after Leganes winner
At the other end of the table, Mirandes arrived at Butarque knowing only a win would keep them in Segunda. They were on course until the 68th minute, when Alex Millan’s goal for Leganes settled the contest 1-0 and sent Los Jabalies down. It was a cruel ending for a side that had controlled much of the match before that decisive moment.
Real Zaragoza had already been condemned before the final day, meaning Mirandes join them and one other side in dropping to Primera Federación.
