Christian Pulisic gave an early scare to United States fans before reassuring those around him that he was fine after being substituted at halftime in the USMNT’s 4-1 World Cup 2026 opener against Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium on Friday.

Pulisic was replaced by midfielder Sebastian Berhalter at the break following a solid first-half performance, immediately raising concerns about the 27-year-old’s availability for the remainder of the tournament. Those fears were quickly eased, however, when Pulisic was spotted communicating with someone in the friends and family section as he returned to the pitch area.

“I did see Christian Pulisic look up to someone from the friends and family section when he walked back on the pitch for the second half and say ‘I’m good,’” reporter Jenny Taft said. “I’m watching him on the bench right now, he’s up and down, on his feet, with no signs of discomfort, in my opinion of Christian Pulisic right now.”

The news will come as a significant relief given Pulisic’s injury history this season. The AC Milan winger missed seven matches for club and country during the 2025-26 campaign, including a 23-day absence caused by a hamstring problem — the type of injury that tends to linger and recur under tournament conditions.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino was set to address Pulisic’s fitness in his post-match press conference, where more clarity on the substitution’s nature — precautionary or otherwise — was expected.

The result itself was a commanding start for the host nation, with the 4-1 scoreline against Paraguay sending an early statement of intent at a tournament the United States are co-hosting alongside Canada and Mexico.
