PSG withdraw from Julian Alvarez pursuit after doubts over player's interest
Paris Saint-Germain have pulled out of the race to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez following initial talks, with the club unconvinced the Argentine was keen to join them. Barcelona remain his reported preferred destination, while Arsenal are also being monitored as a potential suitor.
Paris Saint-Germain have ended their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez after initial talks left the French club unconvinced of his desire to move to Paris, according to L’Equipe, cited by Diario AS.
PSG are reported to have already made an approach to Atletico before Alvarez signalled his wish to leave the club, but after direct contact with the player’s camp, they chose not to push further. The club’s position was straightforward: they did not want to pursue a player who was not enthusiastic about signing for them.
Alvarez has been the dominant transfer story in Spain since the end of the Liga season. Atletico responded to the speculation with a social media jab at Barcelona while publicly dismissing reports of a €100 million offer, pointing to a contract that runs until 2030 and a release clause set at €500 million. Despite that public stance, widespread reports indicate Alvarez has privately communicated to the club that he wants to leave, with Barcelona identified as his preferred destination.
With PSG stepping aside, the field of credible suitors has narrowed. Arsenal are the remaining club most frequently linked with the 25-year-old, and their position could become clearer in the coming weeks. The Gunners won the Premier League title this season but fell short in the Champions League, and there is a sense within the club that a marquee attacking addition could be the decisive move. Striker Viktor Gyokeres, signed last summer as the club’s primary number nine, struggled to consistently meet expectations in his debut campaign.
Whether Arsenal are willing to meet Atletico’s valuation — or negotiate a fee well below the €500 million release clause — remains the central question. Barcelona face the same financial reality, making any deal for Alvarez complicated regardless of the player’s preferences.
