Prince William visited St George’s Park to personally thank the backroom staff preparing England for this summer’s World Cup, telling them the team is “closing in” on ending the country’s 59-year wait for a major men’s international trophy.

The Prince of Wales, who serves as president of the Football Association, spent time with coaches, analysts, medical personnel, nutritionists, sports scientists, and logistics staff who support Thomas Tuchel’s squad. Footage of the visit was shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ official social media accounts.

In remarks captured on video, William acknowledged the largely unseen contribution of the support team. “You don’t get as much acknowledgement or credit as you deserve,” he said. “Not everyone gets to see all the hard work you put in. The success of the players is from the foundations you build, so thank you.”

He also pointed to recent momentum in English football as a reason for optimism. “All of the things are coming in a line now: the Lionesses’ successes they’ve had, two men’s Euros finals — it feels like we are closing in on that ambition. Go with my blessings and my best wishes to all of you. Enjoy it, look after each other and give your best. I’m sure we will do well, so good luck.”

England open their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, before facing Ghana in Massachusetts on June 21 and Panama in New Jersey on June 27. It is believed William could travel to the United States during the tournament, potentially extending a trip to remain in the country around July 4.

The visit follows a high-profile weekend for William as a football supporter. He travelled to Istanbul to watch his club side Aston Villa claim their first European trophy in 40 years, celebrating their 3-0 Europa League final victory over Freiburg. Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia, and Morgan Rogers secured the win, with William visibly emotional in the stands and filmed on his phone during the pre-match build-up and trophy lift.
