Michel Platini does not believe in another triumph for the Blues. Asked about his favourite for the 2026 World Cup, the former France number 10 designated Portugal, despite the disappointing draw conceded by the Seleção at the start of the competition against DR Congo (1-1).

“We know very well the best teams in the world. We often see the same countries go far, with the exception of a surprise team. I would put money on Portugal. If you saw how PSG played with its Portuguese midfielders, I think they could surprise us in this tournament,” said the winner of Euro 1984, in comments reported by L’Équipe.

These statements come as Platini emerges cleared from the “FIFAgate” affair, in which he was notably accused of defrauding FIFA of two million euros. Completely exonerated, he is now speaking more freely about world football news.

On the question of Cristiano Ronaldo, whose presence in the national team at 41 years old regularly sparks debate, Platini defended the striker. “I think Cristiano has his destiny in his hands and in his head. It’s up to him to decide what to do and when to do it. He clearly has a different physique from mine, which will allow him to continue playing much longer.”

The former France captain also shared a personal confidence to explain his goodwill towards CR7: “I didn’t have luck with my injury in 1986 for the World Cup, the Heysel tragedy, I lived through so many things that pushed me to stop earlier. If Ronaldo is still passionate about football — and he is to continue playing — and if coach Roberto Martinez continues to field him, I’m sure he’s right.”
