Pique slams La Masia graduate Cucurella over £52m Real Madrid move from Chelsea
Gerard Pique has publicly criticised Marc Cucurella after the Chelsea left-back completed a £52m transfer to Real Madrid, arguing that a player raised in Barcelona's La Masia academy should never join the club's fiercest rivals.
Gerard Pique has condemned Marc Cucurella’s £52m move from Chelsea to Real Madrid, insisting that a player formed in Barcelona’s La Masia academy crosses a line by joining the club’s greatest rivals.
Cucurella, 27, sealed a permanent transfer to the Bernabeu this summer after three seasons at Stamford Bridge, signing a contract with Real Madrid until 2032. He will join his new club for pre-season following Spain’s World Cup campaign, having played the full 90 minutes in La Roja’s opening goalless draw with Cape Verde.
Pique, a World Cup winner with Spain and a long-serving Barcelona captain, shared a brief connection with Cucurella when the left-back made his only senior Barca appearance — a Copa del Rey match in the 2017/18 season in which Pique was an unused substitute. Cucurella had come through La Masia before loan spells eventually led him to Getafe, Brighton, and then Chelsea in 2022.
“Cucurella was formed in La Masia. He wore the Barça badge as a child, learnt the club’s values and knew exactly what Barcelona means to millions of fans around the world. That’s why this hurts even more,” Pique said.
The former centre-back did not hold back in spelling out what he sees as a betrayal of identity. “A player who comes through La Masia understands the rivalry better than anyone. If you grow up in Barcelona’s youth academy and then choose Real Madrid, don’t expect the Barca fans to celebrate it.”
Pique added: “La Masia is more than just a football academy: it’s an identity. You can leave Barcelona, but joining Real Madrid after coming through the ranks at La Masia? For many fans, that’s crossing a line. People can make their own decisions, but a true Barca fan never forgets where they come from.”
Chelsea confirmed the departure in an official statement, noting that Cucurella had been part of the squad that won the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at the club. He also collected a UEFA European Championship winners’ medal with Spain in 2024.
“Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements. We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career,” the statement read.
