Pimblett submits Saint Denis in under 60 seconds to reignite UFC lightweight title push
Paddy Pimblett silenced doubters at UFC 329 by submitting Benoit Saint Denis in under a minute, his first win since Justin Gaethje handed him his sole UFC defeat in January. The performance prompted calls from fellow fighters for a title showdown with Ilia Topuria.
Paddy Pimblett announced his return to form at UFC 329 by submitting Benoit Saint Denis in under 60 seconds, stealing the spotlight on a card headlined by Conor McGregor’s comeback fight against Max Holloway.
The finish was Pimblett’s 10th win in his last 11 UFC appearances and his first since Justin Gaethje handed him his only promotional defeat this past January. Moving swiftly and decisively, “The Baddy” put Saint Denis to sleep with a submission that left his peers buzzing on social media.
Featherweight veteran Billy Quarantillo was among the first to react, writing on Twitter: “Quick submission — Paddy is the real deal.” Retired stars Kenny Florian and Glover Teixeira, both respected for their grappling credentials, were equally effusive in their praise.
The performance reignited debate about Pimblett’s place in the lightweight title picture. UFC veteran Matt Brown went straight to the point, posting on Twitter: “Ilia vs. Paddy next? Easiest matchmaking ever right?” — a reference to former two-division champion Ilia Topuria, who holds the featherweight belt and has been linked with a move to lightweight.
Pimblett has long divided opinion in MMA circles. His fan appeal is undeniable, but the loss to Gaethje raised questions about whether he could compete at the very top of the lightweight division. Saturday night’s display — clinical, fast, and technically sharp — went some way toward answering those critics.
Whether UFC matchmakers act on Brown’s suggestion remains to be seen, but Pimblett has now positioned himself firmly back in the conversation for a major lightweight assignment.
