McGregor injures himself inside a minute as Holloway wins UFC 329 comeback fight by stoppage
Conor McGregor's long-awaited return after five years ended in under a minute at UFC 329, when a pre-existing injury and an early flying kick left him unable to continue against Max Holloway at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Conor McGregor’s comeback after five years away from the octagon lasted less than a minute at UFC 329, ending in an injury stoppage as Max Holloway claimed victory at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The fight was billed as a rematch between two UFC legends, but it unravelled almost immediately. McGregor appeared to be carrying an injury before he even stepped into the octagon, and the situation worsened when he attempted a flying kick at the opening of the bout. He was unable to stand effectively after that, leaving Holloway with little to work with as he threw punches at his grounded opponent. With McGregor clearly unable to continue, the referee called a halt to proceedings, draining the atmosphere from a sold-out arena that had expected something far more dramatic.
The reaction from the wider MMA community was swift and largely withering. UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev captured the mood concisely on social media, writing: “Conor beat Conor. Congrats, Max.”
For McGregor, the result is a brutal full stop on what was meant to be a statement return. The Irishman had not competed since suffering a broken leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, and anticipation for his comeback had built considerably over the intervening years. Instead of a redemptive performance, he leaves Las Vegas with another injury and a loss that will raise serious questions about what comes next for one of the sport’s most recognisable figures.
Holloway, for his part, did what he could with the circumstances, but the stoppage denied him the chance to demonstrate the full extent of his abilities against a compromised opponent. The Hawaiian remains one of the most respected fighters in the promotion, and this victory — however unsatisfying the manner — adds another name to his record.
