Olympic gold medalist Steveson TKOs Ellison on dominant UFC debut at 329
Gable Steveson made an emphatic entrance to the UFC at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, stopping Elisha Ellison via first-round TKO at 2:31 to extend his perfect MMA record to four wins, all by first-round knockout.
Gable Steveson announced himself to the UFC with a commanding first-round TKO of Elisha Ellison at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, finishing the heavyweight bout at the 2:31 mark and running his unbeaten MMA record to four wins — every one of them a first-round knockout.
Steveson entered the contest as one of the heaviest betting favourites in UFC history, and his performance matched the billing. He out-landed Ellison 41-14 in total strikes before the referee waved it off, leaving little doubt about the outcome from the opening exchanges.
“I wanted Elisha Ellison to feel that pressure; I wanted him to feel pain. I wanted to go out there and make him quit,” Steveson said after the fight. “And I knew when Elisha Ellison got hit hard, he would fall down. And he did fall down.”
The 23-year-old arrives in the Octagon as one of the most decorated wrestlers in American history. He claimed two NCAA Division I national titles before winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics, a résumé that made him one of the most anticipated MMA prospects in recent memory.
Steveson’s transition from the wrestling mat to the cage has been seamless so far. All four of his professional victories have come before the end of the first round, suggesting a finishing instinct that complements his elite grappling base. Whether he can sustain that level against more experienced UFC heavyweights remains to be seen, but his debut offered little for opponents to exploit.
