Philippe Mexès returns to football ten years after retirement as consultant
Ten years after hanging up his boots, Philippe Mexès is making his return to football by joining Ligue 1+ as a consultant, alongside his former teammate Adil Rami.
Philippe Mexès is returning to football ten years after his retirement. The former French international defender, who ended his career in 2016, is joining Ligue 1+ as a consultant to commentate on the French championship.
After a decade devoted to family life, Mexès says he simply “felt it was the right time” to reconnect with the world of football. However, he clarifies that he wants to rediscover the atmosphere of the sport without its constraints: “I think I mainly want to rediscover this world without necessarily rediscovering the constraints of being a player.”
A duo with Adil Rami
For this new venture, Mexès will reunite with Adil Rami, his former teammate in the French national team and at AC Milan. The two men intend to remain authentic behind the microphone. “We’re not going to play a role. We’re going to be ourselves,” warns the former defender, who nonetheless acknowledges he needs to get back into the swing of things after ten years away: “I’m going to do it seriously because it’s becoming increasingly interesting.”
Over 400 matches at the highest level
Formed at Auxerre, where he won the Coupe de France in 2003, Mexès then joined AS Roma for seven seasons before signing with AC Milan in 2011, the club with which he won the Serie A title. In the French national team, he earned 29 caps and participated in Euro 2012. In total, his professional career spans over 400 matches.
Mexès is approaching this new consultant role seriously, aware that it is a profession in its own right, quite different from that of a player.
