Luca Zidane played his first minutes in a Leganés shirt on Saturday, forced into action against Oviedo in Liga 2 after starter Fernandez was sent off. An unplanned opportunity for the 28-year-old goalkeeper, who arrived in Spain this summer with the ambition of reclaiming a leading role.

Zinédine Zidane’s son is going through a difficult period since leaving Granada. His transfer to Leganés was specifically aimed at reviving a stalling career in a league he knows well: he has nearly 200 matches in Spanish second division. If Fernandez’s absence extends, Luca Zidane will have several consecutive matches to convince the coaching staff and attempt to overturn the goalkeeper hierarchy.

His record with the Algeria national team remains more mixed. After choosing to represent the Fennecs rather than France, he failed to establish himself as a regular starter. His early performances in an Algeria shirt drew criticism, and he quickly lost his place in the goalkeeper pecking order.

Algeria is currently searching for a new head coach, whose identity should be announced soon. A change in coaching staff could reopen doors for Zidane, provided he manages to deliver convincing performances with Leganés in the coming weeks.
