Convincing victory, but Marseille must sell key players to balance finances

Olympique de Marseille opened the Ligue 1 season with a decisive victory over Strasbourg (4-0) Friday night at the Vélodrome, marking Bruno Genesio’s first official match on the Marseille bench. But the good news ends there.

Before kickoff, American owner Frank McCourt and president Stéphane Richard met with representatives of the main supporter associations at the Jean Bouin stadium. The exchanges were tense. According to one of the supporters’ leaders present, McCourt allegedly dismissed fans’ concerns without providing satisfactory answers: “We had a meeting with McCourt less than an hour and a half ago. He clearly takes us for fools. Tonight we’re going to start pounding the table and demand he account for himself, because what’s happening at Marseille is not normal.”

The core issue is financial. The club does not expect to return to equilibrium — and therefore resume investment — for two to three years. In the meantime, sales are inevitable. Bruno Genesio confirmed this himself after the match: “We must reduce our wage bill. Until that’s done, we won’t be able to recruit. Depending on the salaries involved, it could be three, four, five players.”

Among the players most likely to be sold are Igor Paixao, Amine Gouiri, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, Nayef Aguerd and Quinten Timber, as well as potentially Timothy Weah and Emerson Palmieri. These departures would significantly weaken the squad available to the French coach just as he settles in.

This situation is constrained by formal financial commitments Marseille made to UEFA and the DNCG during the summer transfer window to avoid heavy sanctions. The club’s room for maneuver is therefore narrow, and supporter pressure risks intensifying if the announced sales materialize without visible returns on the pitch.
