Patrick Vieira appointed Senegal head coach, less than a year before World Cup
1998 World Cup winner with France, Patrick Vieira has officially been named Senegal head coach on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, less than a year before the World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Patrick Vieira is Senegal’s new head coach. The Senegalese Football Federation officially confirmed his appointment on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, entrusting the former midfielder with preparing the Lions of Teranga for the 2026 World Cup.
An iconic figure in French football, Vieira won the World Cup in 1998 wearing the Bleus jersey before establishing himself as one of the best midfielders of his generation at Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City. After a career as a club manager — notably at Nice and Crystal Palace — he is now taking on his first role as head of a national team.
Senegal, African champions in 2021 and 2022, will compete in the 2026 World Cup jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Vieira’s mission will be to maintain the level of demand of a team that ranks among the best on the African continent.
Further information on contract terms and the technical staff is expected in the coming hours.
