Harry Kane is set to open contract extension talks with Bayern Munich imminently, the England captain confirmed, with the striker now in the last 12 months of the four-year agreement he signed upon joining from Tottenham Hotspur for £86.4m in August 2023.

“We obviously said we wanted to talk after the World Cup and after my holiday,” Kane told Kicker. “So I’m not sure exactly when, but they’ll start this week, next week… we’ll start those talks.”

The 33-year-old was keen to frame the situation as relaxed on both sides. “Like I’ve said before, we’re calm, I think they’re calm with the situation,” he said. “Obviously now is the time to start talking, because there’s only a year left. That’s important. But both sides are relaxed, and I’m pretty sure there’ll be some talks this week or next week.”

Kane returned to Bayern’s squad ahead of Saturday’s Supercup fixture against Borussia Dortmund having come off the back of a remarkable individual season — 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions — and a summer in which he broke a long-standing England record. At this summer’s World Cup in North America, Kane became England’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament, netting 14 goals in 18 appearances to surpass Gary Lineker’s record of 10. England’s campaign ended in the semi-finals, however, with a defeat to Argentina ending hopes of a first World Cup triumph.

Kane also addressed his Ballon d’Or prospects, acknowledging the award’s prestige while distancing himself from any expectation. “The Ballon d’Or is as big as it gets, from an individual point of view,” he said. “I know I had a great season last season, but the focus is on this new season.”

“The Ballon d’Or’s not in my hands,” he added. “I’ve done what I can do in terms of putting in the performances. It’s now down to votes and other people and the media — stuff I can’t control — so we’ll see what happens. Obviously, it would be amazing if it was to happen. But ultimately, it’s still two or three months away before that’s decided so it’s not something that’s at the front of my mind right now.”

Kane has claimed the Bundesliga top scorer award in each of his two seasons at Bayern, and the reigning champions will be eager to secure his future before rival clubs can begin approaching him as a free agent next summer.
