One year on, Diogo Jota's final Instagram post remains a haunting tribute to family
Twelve months after Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva died in a car crash, the Liverpool forward's last Instagram post — a wedding video shared hours before the accident — endures as a deeply personal memorial.
Twelve months after football was shaken by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a car crash, the Liverpool forward’s final Instagram post continues to serve as an unintended but deeply moving farewell.
Jota was 28 when he and André were killed. The post that now greets anyone who visits his Instagram profile was shared in early July 2025, less than 24 hours before news of the accident broke. It was a behind-the-scenes compilation from his wedding day, marking his marriage to childhood sweetheart Rute with the caption: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”
A voiceover in the video addressed the couple directly: “Dear Rute, dear Diogo. This is a day that will mark your lives for the rest of your days. This is the only day that you have been able to get together, at the same time, in the same place, your family, your friends, to celebrate what truly matters, which is love.”
The post was shared in the afterglow of a significant footballing achievement. Just weeks earlier, Jota had been part of the Portugal squad that won the UEFA Nations League, defeating Spain on penalties. He had been celebrating that triumph when he left for his family holiday and wedding.
Over five years at Anfield, Jota built a lasting bond with Liverpool supporters. He won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup with the club, and reached the Champions League final. His form had made him a near-certainty for Portugal’s squad at this summer’s World Cup in North America. The Portuguese national team have been wearing wristbands bearing his name at the tournament in his memory.
Jota is survived by Rute and their three children — sons Dinis and Duarte, and a daughter born in November 2024. In December 2025, both boys served as mascots when Liverpool faced Jota’s former club Wolves, with Rute present in the stands. She has since publicly thanked Liverpool fans on multiple occasions for the warmth and support shown to her family.
The wedding video, frozen at the top of his profile, has become something more than a social media post. For those who knew his story, it captures precisely what Jota worked to protect: his family, his love, and the life he had built beyond football.
