Andre Onana is on the verge of returning to Trabzonspor on loan for a second consecutive season, with the Cameroon international no closer to reclaiming a place at Manchester United under new head coach Michael Carrick.

The 33-appearance spell in Turkey last season did little to revive Onana’s prospects at Old Trafford. Senne Lammens, signed in 2025, has cemented himself as United’s first choice, and the club opted not to use the £43m goalkeeper even as a deputy to the Belgian. Rather than sell, United appear content to loan Onana out again — meaning they will not recoup any transfer fee for a player who joined from Inter Milan in 2023.

Onana’s fall from favour began early last season when he was dropped by then-head coach Ruben Amorim. His most recent appearance for the club came in a Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby last August — a low-key exit for a goalkeeper who arrived with considerable pedigree.

The 29-year-old still has two years remaining on his United contract, which complicates any permanent departure. A second loan to Trabzonspor offers a practical solution for all parties: Onana gets regular football, and United defer a transfer decision while avoiding the cost of carrying a third-choice keeper on the wage bill.

Despite the circumstances of his loan, Onana contributed meaningfully in Turkey last season. Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish Super Lig and claimed the Turkish Cup, giving the goalkeeper silverware if not the Premier League redemption he might have sought when he was bought by Erik ten Hag — his former manager at Ajax — two years ago.
