Olise hat-trick seals France's 3-1 win over Northern Ireland in Deschamps' last home game
Michael Olise scored three times, including a stunning 20-metre curler, as France beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Lille on Monday — Didier Deschamps' final match in charge on home soil before the 2026 World Cup.
Michael Olise completed a hat-trick with a brilliant curling finish as France defeated Northern Ireland 3-1 in Lille on Monday, wrapping up their final World Cup warm-up on home soil with a commanding performance.
The Bayern Munich winger opened his account in the 43rd minute, converting from close range after Ousmane Dembélé’s shot was blocked. He struck again in the 49th, blasting in from near the penalty spot after Northern Ireland failed to clear a cross from the right. Olise saved the best for last in the 75th minute, breaking down the right flank and bending an unstoppable shot into the top left corner from 20 metres.
The result was also significant off the pitch. It was the last game on French soil for head coach Didier Deschamps, who will step down after the World Cup following 14 years in charge of Les Bleus. Deschamps named a glittering attack that also included Kylian Mbappé and Désiré Doué alongside Olise and Dembélé.
France’s defence did switch off briefly after Olise’s second goal, allowing Patrick Kelly to tap in a cross midway through the second half and pull one back for Northern Ireland.
Mbappé, meanwhile, was unable to add to his 56 international goals and remains one short of Olivier Giroud’s all-time France scoring record.
Olise, who registered 22 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich this season, looks set to be a certain starter when two-time World Cup champions France — runners-up to Argentina four years ago — open their 2026 campaign against Senegal on 16 June in New Jersey.
