Odegaard targets Champions League glory to follow Arsenal's first title in 22 years
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard says the squad wants to 'make even more history' by winning the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, with Jurrien Timber declared fit to start.
Martin Odegaard has called on Arsenal to complete a historic double by winning the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, days after the club ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title.
The Gunners captain said lifting the league trophy has only sharpened the squad’s appetite rather than dulled it. “When you get the taste of winning and lifting a trophy, you know how nice it feels,” Odegaard said. “Obviously, we want to do it again. It would mean a lot to everyone, to our supporters. We’re ready to do it and looking forward to the game.”
Arsenal have never won the European Cup, and Odegaard made clear what the occasion means to him personally. “It has been like that since I was a little kid,” the Norwegian said. “I have been dreaming about winning these trophies since I grew up playing football. When I started playing with my friends in the little pitch next to my house, I was dreaming of this moment — to win trophies, to play this final and, of course, win it.”
Odegaard acknowledged that securing the Premier League title has removed some external pressure, but insisted the squad’s mentality remains unchanged. “I don’t feel like a different person. For us it doesn’t change a lot other than it’s an amazing feeling and an amazing achievement. But the mindset is still the same. We want to come here and win tomorrow.”
Arsenal received a significant fitness boost ahead of the final, with defender Jurrien Timber declared fit to start against PSG. Odegaard pointed to the collective experience the group has accumulated as a source of confidence. “I think everything we’ve been through prepared us well for these last few weeks and again tomorrow. We are ready for it.”
Victory on Saturday would give Arsenal their first European Cup and complete one of the most celebrated seasons in the club’s history.
