Mexico manager Javier Aguirre is weighing a start for veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in El Tri’s final FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A fixture against Czechia on Tuesday, with the side already assured of a place in the knockout rounds following wins over South Africa and South Korea.

Ochoa, 40, made history earlier in the tournament as the first goalkeeper to participate in six World Cup editions, placing him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only men’s players to have featured in that many tournaments. Having been an unused substitute in 2006 and 2010, he played in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

Aguirre, in his third stint as Mexico’s manager, has not yet confirmed whether Ochoa will feature against Czechia but pushed back firmly on suggestions the veteran was recalled purely for sentimental reasons. “I have always said since I returned that whoever is here, is here on their own merit,” Aguirre said.

Ochoa was brought back into the national squad after an injury to presumptive first-choice goalkeeper Luis Malagón, giving the selection a practical as well as symbolic dimension. With the group already decided, a heavily rotated Mexico side against Czechia offers a natural opportunity for Aguirre to give Ochoa game time.

Affectionately known as “San Memo” by Mexican supporters, Ochoa is among the most decorated players in the history of the national programme. He has won six CONCACAF Gold Cups with El Tri and was part of the Olympic squad that claimed bronze medals in 2004 and 2021.

Currently playing his club football for AEL Limassol in Cyprus, Ochoa has spent his European career across Spain, France, and Italy, while also representing Club América in Liga MX during his domestic spells.
