NYC Mayor Mamdani joins Rikers Island inmates for World Cup semi-final watch party
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited Rikers Island correctional facility to watch the England vs Argentina World Cup semi-final alongside more than 100 inmates. The jail has held 90 such events since the tournament began, rewarding good behaviour.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined more than 100 inmates at Rikers Island correctional facility on Wednesday to watch the World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina, part of an ongoing series of watch parties the jail has hosted since the tournament began last month.
The event was held in a gymnasium at the complex’s main intake centre, where inmates dressed in tan uniforms took seats at tables facing a projection screen framed by colourful balloon towers. Mamdani arrived shortly before kickoff with his jacket off and shirt sleeves rolled up, sitting at one of the front tables and immediately engaging with inmates about the tournament.
The watch parties are offered as an incentive for good behaviour, with eligibility requiring inmates to have been incident-free for at least 30 days. In total, 90 such events have been held since the tournament kicked off, with approximately 4,500 of Rikers Island’s roughly 6,600 inmates participating.
Mamdani, who described himself as a Morocco fan, chatted with inmates about the match and the broader tournament. When one inmate predicted Argentina would beat England and go on to face Spain — which had defeated France the previous day — the mayor offered a measured response: “You never know.”
In a lighter moment, another inmate mentioned he was being released later that day. “That’s amazing,” Mamdani said, shaking his hand and patting him on the back.
The mayor stayed for roughly the first 20 minutes of the match before departing. The visit drew attention both for its setting — Rikers Island has long been associated with overcrowding and reports of violence — and for the broader rehabilitation philosophy it represents, using a global sporting event as a tool for inmate engagement and incentivisation.
