Lionel Messi produced two decisive assists in the closing minutes to send Argentina into the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a 2-1 comeback victory over England at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday. The result books Argentina a second consecutive World Cup final appearance, where they will face Spain on Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium.

Argentina looked to be heading out when Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute, leaving Messi and his side needing something special. It arrived in the 85th minute, when Messi picked out Enzo Fernández to level the tie and force a nervy finale.

With the match seemingly destined for extra time, Messi delivered again in the second minute of stoppage time, threading a pass to Lautaro Martínez at the far post. The striker headed home to complete the comeback and send Argentina through.

The two assists extended one of football’s most remarkable statistical streaks: Messi has now scored or assisted in 11 consecutive World Cup matches, the longest such run by any player since records began in 1966.

Argentina, the reigning world champions, will now bid to retain their title against Spain on Sunday in New Jersey, with Messi once again at the centre of their ambitions.
