Deschamps ends his reign against England after France's elimination by Spain
Beaten 2-0 by Spain in the World Cup 2026 semi-final, France will face England in the third-place playoff in Miami on Saturday. It will be the last match of Didier Deschamps as France manager.
Didier Deschamps will play his final match at the helm of the French national team against England on Saturday in Miami (11 p.m.), in the third-place playoff of the 2026 World Cup. The Blues were eliminated Tuesday evening in Dallas by Spain with a score of 2-0, while the Three Lions suffered the same fate Wednesday in Atlanta, beaten by Argentina (2-1).
England had opened the scoring in the second half thanks to Anthony Gordon (55’), before collapsing late in the match. Enzo Fernandez (85’) then Lautaro Martinez (90’+2) turned the situation around, both set up by Lionel Messi, to secure Argentina’s qualification for the final.
Fourteen years after taking charge of the French bench, Deschamps thus sees his adventure with the Blues conclude without the third star so hoped for. The challenge that remains for him is to remobilize a group badly shaken by the defeat against Spain, in order to finish this World Cup on a positive note.
All indications suggest that Zinedine Zidane should succeed him at the head of the national team. An official announcement is expected shortly after the end of the tournament.
