Nurmagomedov returns to gym days after first knockout loss at UFC Shanghai

Umar Nurmagomedov is back in the gym less than a week after suffering the first knockout loss of his career, stopped by Yadong Song in the second round of their UFC Shanghai main event on 29 August. The defeat was Nurmagomedov’s second inside the UFC and leaves him outside title contention in the bantamweight division.

Rather than retreat from public view, the Dagestani fighter addressed his supporters directly via Instagram, striking a defiant and philosophical tone.

“Stay strong and thankful to God always,” Nurmagomedov wrote. “I have no plans to lose heart or withdraw into myself. I got up and shook off the dust. I’m back in the gym and getting back to work.”

Nurmagomedov also urged fans not to feel sorry for him, framing his setback against the broader suffering he sees in the world.

“Look at the tragedy that has befallen Gaza,” he added. “Even they do not lose heart. They remain strong and resilient. What right do we — alive and healthy — have to complain? Alhamdulillah.”

The loss to Song is a significant blow to Nurmagomedov’s trajectory. He had entered UFC Shanghai as one of the division’s most promising contenders, carrying an unbeaten professional record into the promotion before his first UFC defeat earlier in his career. A second loss, and one by finish, will likely require him to rebuild before any title conversation resumes.

No timeline for his next bout has been announced, and an extended break is expected given the nature of the stoppage.
