Nurmagomedov and Song make weight as three fighters miss at UFC Shanghai

Umar Nurmagomedov and Yadong Song both cleared their weigh-ins ahead of UFC Shanghai on 29 August, confirming the bantamweight main event. Three fighters on the card — Andre Lima, Jingnan Xiong, and Julia Polastri — missed weight, though all three of their bouts are still scheduled to go ahead.

Nurmagomedov (20-1) tipped the scales at 135.5 pounds for his second UFC main event. The 30-year-old Eagles MMA product has recovered from his first professional defeat — a loss to Merab Dvalishvili — by earning back-to-back decision victories over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo, leaving him 8-1 inside the Octagon.

Song (23-9-1, 1 NC) weighed exactly 136 pounds and enters the fight looking for the most significant win of his career. The Team Alpha Male fighter and fan favourite is 2-1 in his last three bouts, with wins over Figueiredo and Henry Cejudo either side of a decision defeat to Sean O’Malley.

Of the three weight misses, Andre Lima came in one pound over the flyweight limit at 127 pounds and has been fined 20 percent of his purse for his bout against Namsrai Batbayar. In the women’s strawweight contest, Jingnan Xiong weighed 117 pounds — one pound above the non-title limit — while her opponent Julia Polastri was 2.5 pounds over at 118.5 pounds. Despite both fighters missing, the bout will move forward.
