Ngumoha's England debut sends Iraola a clear message as Bayern Munich circle
Rio Ngumoha earned player of the match on his senior England debut against New Zealand on Saturday, a timely reminder for new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola as Bayern Munich identify the 17-year-old as their top transfer target.
Rio Ngumoha marked his senior England debut with a player-of-the-match display in the Three Lions’ 1-0 warm-up victory over New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday, handing new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola an immediate selection and retention dilemma as Bayern Munich circle the 17-year-old winger.
Ngumoha came off the bench in the second half and brightened a largely flat performance, operating on the right flank rather than his customary left side. Jude Bellingham presented him with his first cap after the match and offered a glowing assessment. “Congratulations on an amazing debut,” Bellingham said. “I think we all enjoyed watching it, and obviously, you’re going to have a really bright future at your club and hopefully with us as well.”
The timing of the performance carries extra weight given the transfer backdrop. According to The Athletic, Bayern Munich have identified Ngumoha as their primary target to provide cover on the left wing following Luis Diaz’s move from Liverpool last summer. The Bundesliga club has yet to submit a formal bid, but Ngumoha is said to be aware of their interest. Liverpool, for their part, have no intention of selling.
Iraola was confirmed as Liverpool’s new head coach earlier this week after the club parted ways with Arne Slot. The Basque coach now inherits a squad that includes a teenager who made 31 appearances under Slot in 2025/26, contributing three goals and one assist — and who has just announced himself on the international stage.
Ngumoha was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday, but was called up for the final two warm-up fixtures ahead of the tournament. His inclusion alone signals the regard in which he is held at international level.
For Iraola, Saturday’s showing underlines what is at stake. Keeping Ngumoha at Anfield and building him into the first-team setup looks set to be one of the new manager’s most pressing priorities from the moment he takes charge.
