Neymar retires from international football after Brazil's World Cup exit to Norway
Neymar has announced his retirement from international football after Brazil were eliminated by Norway 2-1 in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. The 34-year-old ends his international career as Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 80 goals in 129 appearances.
Neymar has retired from international football after Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, bringing an end to a 16-year career with the Seleção. The 34-year-old forward departs as the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Brazilian men’s national team, having netted 80 goals across 129 appearances.
“It is now over,” Neymar said in confirming his decision following the loss.
Neymar made his senior international debut in 2010 and went on to represent Brazil at four World Cup tournaments. He also featured in two Olympic Games, claiming a silver medal in 2012 before captaining the side to gold on home soil in Rio in 2016.
His involvement at the 2026 World Cup was limited. He made two appearances off the bench — a cameo in the group-stage win over Scotland, and a late substitute appearance against Norway in which he converted a penalty in stoppage time to pull Brazil level at 1-1. It was not enough, as Norway ultimately prevailed 2-1 to advance.
Norway will face the winner of the round-of-16 tie between Mexico and England in the quarterfinals at Miami Stadium on July 11.
Neymar’s international legacy is defined by individual brilliance across a generation, even as the World Cup winner’s medal he pursued throughout his career remained elusive. His 80 international goals stand as a record that may not be threatened for years to come.
