Newcastle's three hidden clauses could earn millions more from Gordon's £69m Barcelona move

Newcastle United stand to earn considerably more than the initial £69.3m fee from Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona, thanks to three financial clauses embedded in the transfer agreement by sporting director Ross Wilson.

Gordon, 23, has signed a five-year deal at the Camp Nou running until 2031, reported to be worth £300,000 per week — a total wage commitment of just under £80m across the contract’s full term. Newcastle originally signed the winger from Everton in 2023 for £45m, and the Toffees are entitled to 15 per cent of the Barcelona fee under the terms of that earlier deal.

Appearance clause

The first add-on entitles Newcastle to £860,000 (€1m) per season if Gordon features in at least 60 per cent of Barcelona’s matches. Given that consistent availability has been a hallmark of his time at St James’ Park, the Magpies could collect the full £4.3m (€5m) if he remains a regular starter across all five years.

Silverware clause

A further £4.3m (€5m) is triggered should Gordon win trophies with Barcelona during his contract. The clause carries genuine weight: Barcelona have claimed the La Liga title in each of the past two seasons, and silverware under Hansi Flick’s successor remains a realistic prospect.

Sell-on clause

Newcastle have also secured a sell-on percentage, meaning they would receive a further cut of any future transfer fee if Barcelona sell Gordon before his contract expires in 2031. The precise percentage has not been disclosed in full, but its inclusion adds a longer-term financial dimension to the deal.

Gordon’s start to life in Spain has not been without turbulence. England manager Thomas Tuchel kept faith with the winger for the Three Lions’ friendly against Ghana despite a quiet performance in the 4-2 win over Croatia, though his place in the squad for the Panama fixture is less certain. Barcelona chose Gordon over Marcus Rashford — who impressed on loan at the club last season — citing his pace, directness, and ability to beat defenders on the outside.

For Newcastle, the structured nature of the deal reflects a broader shift in how the club approaches player sales, with Wilson’s clause-heavy framework ensuring the Magpies retain a financial stake in Gordon’s success long after his departure.
