Newcastle target Mingueza free transfer to fill right-back void left by Trippier exit
Newcastle United are pursuing Celta Vigo's Oscar Mingueza as a free agent this summer, with Eddie Howe seeking cover at right-back after Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth near the end of their contracts.
Newcastle United are targeting Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza on a free transfer this summer, with Eddie Howe identifying the right-back position as a priority area ahead of what promises to be another significant window at St James’ Park.
Mingueza is set to become a free agent when his Celta Vigo contract expires, and Spanish publication AS has reported that Newcastle are competing with Arsenal for his signature. The 24-year-old Barcelona academy graduate made 147 appearances for Celta, operating primarily at right-back but also featuring 32 times on the left flank and 12 times at centre-back — versatility that fits Howe’s recruitment criteria.
The urgency stems from a thinning pool of options in that position. Tino Livramento is currently Newcastle’s only recognised right-back, while Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth are both approaching the end of their deals. Livramento is also managing an injury, leaving Lewis Miley and academy prospect Leo Shahar as the only short-term cover.
Newcastle have already moved in the market this window, reaching an early agreement for goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, while Anthony Gordon has departed for Barcelona. The club missed out on European football last season and will need to be selective with their transfer budget as they look to push back into Champions League contention.
Howe has spoken openly about the need for a more settled summer after a turbulent one last year. “We need to be ready to twist and turn, depending on what happens,” the Newcastle manager said. “We certainly want a smoother one than last summer. We will need a stronger, tighter squad that’s ready to fight next season for the football club. As long as I have that, I’m happy.”
Mingueza’s ability to cover multiple defensive positions adds further appeal. With Lewis Hall and Dan Burn competing for the left-back berth, a defender capable of slotting in across the backline and as a wing-back would give Howe meaningful depth without requiring a significant outlay — a combination that aligns neatly with Newcastle’s current approach to the market.
