Newcastle reject Tottenham's £80m Tonali bid as Man City weigh £100m move
Tottenham have had an £80 million offer for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali turned down, with the club holding firm on a £100 million asking price. Manchester City are also monitoring the 26-year-old Italy international as a separate target alongside Elliot Anderson.
Newcastle United have rejected an £80 million bid from Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Sandro Tonali, with the club insisting on a £100 million fee for the Italy international. Manchester City are also tracking the 26-year-old, though they are yet to submit a formal offer.
Tottenham were the first club to move concretely for Tonali, but Newcastle swiftly dismissed the approach. The north-east club have made clear they are willing to sell — but only at their stated valuation, leaving any interested party facing a nine-figure outlay.
City’s interest in Tonali is independent of their pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, who has become their primary summer target. Two bids for Anderson have already been rejected, the second worth £120 million. Rather than a fallback option, Tonali is viewed as a potential additional signing — meaning City could conceivably pursue both players, a combination that would likely cost in excess of £200 million.
Spurs could return with an improved offer, though their summer spending is already significant. Roberto De Zerbi’s side have committed £52 million to Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke and added Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers, placing some constraint on further major outlays.
Beyond City and Tottenham, Tonali has attracted attention from Arsenal and Manchester United, while Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also been mentioned as potential suitors — though none of those clubs have been reported to have tabled bids.
City are looking to strengthen in midfield this summer, with a right back and a winger also on their shortlist. Whether they move for Tonali alongside or instead of Anderson will likely depend on how negotiations for the Forest man develop in the coming weeks.
