Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Bazoumana Touré, the 20-year-old Ivorian winger who has become one of the Bundesliga’s standout performers this season after joining Hoffenheim from Swedish club Hammarby last year.
Touré has contributed directly to 20 goals since arriving in German football — five goals and 15 assists — and has also represented Ivory Coast at this summer’s World Cup. Hoffenheim are set to play in Europe next season, but the pull of Premier League football appears to have proved decisive.
The transfer represents a remarkable rise in value. Hammarby made a tenfold return on their investment when they sold Touré to Hoffenheim, and the German club are now expected to receive a fee that effectively quadruples what they paid just over 12 months ago.
Touré’s game is built around raw pace — he is regarded as one of the fastest players in Europe — combined with a tangible end product that separates him from wingers whose threat begins and ends with their speed. He operates predominantly on the left, where his ability to run in behind defences and create chances at volume has drawn widespread attention.
He is also a prolific dribbler, and this past season the Bundesliga provided the stage for Ivory Coast’s wide duo of Touré and Yan Diomandé to flourish in tandem.
Touré’s path to this point follows a route increasingly familiar for young African talent: from ASEC Mimosas in Ivory Coast to Scandinavia, and then on to a major European league. At each step, he has matched the level demanded of him.
At 20, the one area identified for development is his finishing. Should that improve, he carries the profile of a player who could command elite-level fees in the years ahead. For now, Newcastle appear set to be the next club to benefit from his rapid ascent.
