Neville's Ferdinand comparison over Saliba backfired — and Ferdinand knew why
Gary Neville likened a 21-year-old William Saliba to a young Rio Ferdinand after Arsenal's opening day win at Crystal Palace in 2022, only for Ferdinand to bristle at the comparison — having previously called Saliba a 'waste of money' during his loan spell.
Gary Neville’s glowing comparison between William Saliba and a young Rio Ferdinand produced an awkward moment for the former Manchester United defender — one that quietly highlighted how dramatically Ferdinand’s own assessment of the Arsenal centre-back had shifted.
When Saliba impressed on his Premier League debut at Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 2022/23 season, Neville was effusive. “I was massively impressed by him. He reminded me of a young Rio Ferdinand. He’s such a young defender at 21,” Neville said after the match. “Getting through that second half, when Arsenal weren’t at their best, would have been the most pleasing thing for Mikel Arteta.”
Ferdinand, however, was quick to push back — not out of modesty, but out of a desire to let Saliba stand on his own merits. “How old is he? How many Premier League games has he played? How many Premier League games had I played at that point?” he said on his YouTube channel. “I broke the British transfer record at that time and people are drawing comparisons? It’s a madness! Give the boy time, give him some time!”
The defensiveness carried an edge of irony. Just over a year earlier, Ferdinand had been far less charitable about Saliba’s prospects. When Arsenal sent the Frenchman out on loan to Nice in January 2021 — after he had seen barely any first-team action beyond a Community Shield bench appearance — Ferdinand was blunt in his verdict. “Saliba, what’s happened with him? It’s a waste of money it seems at the minute. I don’t know what’s happened,” he said.
Saliba had arrived at Arsenal as a teenager for £27 million but spent three seasons on loan before finally making his top-flight debut under Mikel Arteta. The patience proved justified. He has since become one of the most commanding centre-backs in the Premier League, playing a starring role as Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to be crowned English champions.
The arc of Saliba’s career — from Ferdinand’s ‘waste of money’ verdict to Premier League champion — serves as a pointed reminder of how quickly fortunes can turn, and how early judgements on young defenders can age poorly.
