Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ian Wright will serve as pundits for ITV’s coverage of the World Cup 2026 opening fixture, as Mexico host South Africa at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday evening — a repeat of the tournament’s first game 16 years ago.

Mark Pougatch, ITV’s lead football presenter, will anchor the broadcast from the channel’s US base, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm UK time.

Jon Champion and Ally McCoist are paired together on commentary duty for the match, with McCoist already looking ahead to Scotland’s fixtures later in the tournament.

The punditry trio brings considerable World Cup pedigree to the desk. Neville represented England at the 1998 and 2006 tournaments, missing the 2002 edition through injury — the same tournament that, coincidentally, marked the beginning of his media career in ITV’s studio. Keane featured for the Republic of Ireland at the 1994 World Cup in the United States before the now-infamous Saipan incident ended his involvement ahead of the 2002 tournament. Wright, by contrast, never qualified for a major international tournament with England during his playing career.

The Estadio Azteca provides a storied backdrop for the occasion. The iconic Mexico City ground previously hosted the 2026 opening fixture’s mirror image in 2010, when South Africa — then the tournament’s hosts — faced Mexico in Johannesburg. This time, the roles are reversed, with Mexico serving as one of three co-hosts alongside the United States and Canada.
