Neville demands Glazers sell Manchester United as club sinks to one point above relegation
Gary Neville has called on the Glazer family to sell Manchester United after the club went eight games without a win, leaving them just one point above the Premier League relegation zone with Michael Carrick still in interim charge.
Gary Neville has issued a blunt demand for the Glazer family to sell Manchester United, as the club’s deepening crisis leaves them a single point above the Premier League relegation zone and eight matches without a victory, with Michael Carrick continuing in caretaker charge.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville laid out a damning financial and sporting case against the American ownership. “There’s £1.2bn of debt in that football club, they’re hamstrung in some ways,” he said. “They’ve spent an absolute fortune, just under Man City in the last 15 years. £1.4bn on players, they’re second in the spending, but a lot of it’s the never-never.”
Neville pointed to the Glazers’ near-total absence from Old Trafford over more than two decades as a symbol of their detachment from the club. “They have to sell now, enough is enough,” he said. “The club is in debt, you’ve not spent a penny on the stadium, you’re now trying to borrow £2bn for a stadium you don’t know how the hell you’ll borrow.”
The criticism arrives more than two years after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group took over the club’s football operations in a deal that left the Glazers as majority owners — an arrangement Neville described as “ridiculous”. United have now gone 13 years without a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, and Neville argued that subcontracting football decisions to a separate party had only compounded the structural dysfunction.
United’s next fixture takes them to Stamford Bridge on Saturday to face Chelsea, a side also navigating turbulence of their own. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is under pressure following a defeat to Tottenham and a Carabao Cup exit to Liverpool on penalties.
