Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground last Friday, the club’s CEO Max Eberl confirmed on Wednesday.
Eberl revealed that Kompany had been suffering from a meningeal irritation — an inflammation of the brain’s protective layers that is considered a warning sign for other conditions. “Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl told German broadcaster ARD. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
The 38-year-old had already been unwell in the days before the collapse, missing Bayern’s pre-match press conference ahead of their Champions League fixture against Arsenal. After being taken to hospital, his condition was described as stable. Eberl confirmed Kompany will now go home to rest, though he expressed confidence about a swift return: “I am very confident that he will be back on the touchline, operating at 100 per cent, very soon.”
In Kompany’s absence, assistant Aaron Danks — who worked alongside him at Anderlecht — has taken charge of first-team operations at Bayern. “I explained to him that we would be having no football conversations,” Danks said last week. “It was just checking in on his health and making sure he’s okay. All the football operations are in our hands and we’ll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward.”
Kompany spent nine years at Manchester City after joining from Hamburg in 2008, making 360 appearances and captaining the club to four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four Carabao Cups and two Community Shields before moving into management.
His former City manager Pep Guardiola had spoken glowingly of Kompany’s managerial future as recently as 2023, suggesting a return to the Etihad was inevitable. Guardiola himself departed City last summer, with Enzo Maresca appointed as his successor.
