Nagelsmann open to United approach as Hurzeler rules himself out of Old Trafford vacancy
Julian Nagelsmann has signalled he would listen to Manchester United following his Germany resignation, while Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler is understood to have no interest in replacing under-pressure manager Michael Carrick.
Julian Nagelsmann is open to joining Manchester United should Michael Carrick be dismissed, according to reports, with the former Bayern Munich and Germany coach emerging as a frontrunner for the role. Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler, meanwhile, is understood to have no desire to leave the Amex Stadium for Old Trafford.
Carrick’s position has come under intense scrutiny following a 4-1 defeat to Como, a result that laid bare tensions within the squad. Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the team’s tactical approach, while Carrick responded by pointing to statistics that showed insufficient work rate from his players. The United manager is set to remain in charge for Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth, but club chiefs are reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
Nagelsmann, 39, had been considered for the United job during the summer before Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis. A move did not materialise at that stage because Nagelsmann was committed to leading Germany at the World Cup. Following his resignation after the nation’s last-32 elimination in North America, he is now ready to return to club management and, according to The Telegraph, would be receptive to an approach from United.
Nagelsmann has previously attracted Premier League interest, with both Chelsea and Tottenham having been linked with the German coach at various points in his career.
Hurzeler, 33, has been mooted as a potential candidate given his impressive work at Brighton, who currently sit third in the Premier League and are pushing for Champions League qualification. However, Brighton are reported to be unconcerned about losing their head coach, who does not have a release clause in his contract. Hurzeler is believed to have no interest in the United vacancy at this stage, with sources suggesting he would be more open to future opportunities at clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Arsenal.
Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who is currently unattached, is also understood to be under consideration should United decide to make a change.
