Didier Deschamps will not be Manchester United’s next manager — at least not by his own choice. While the double World Cup winner’s name has circulated on Red Devils supporters’ forums and social media since Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, no serious contact between the two parties has been reported.

Since stepping down from his role with the French national team, Deschamps has received numerous offers. Real Madrid, the Italian national team, several Turkish clubs, and a colossal offer from Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia — a three-year contract with record fees — have all been mentioned in turn. He declined each time, refusing to commit without a sporting project matching his ambitions. According to available information, he is currently enjoying quiet days between Cap d’Ail and Concarneau.

At Manchester, Michael Carrick’s situation has deteriorated considerably. The home draw against Tottenham (1-1), followed by the rout in Italy, have weakened his position. Captain Bruno Fernandes’ public statements after the Como defeat highlighted internal tensions, accelerating speculation over a succession.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann are the best-positioned candidates in Manchester’s leadership’s thinking. Deschamps, meanwhile, does not appear on this list of favourites — his name is being pushed by an enthusiastic section of supporters, not by real negotiations.

The former national team manager has repeatedly stated he would only take a position if the sporting challenge matched his requirements precisely. As it stands, nothing suggests that Manchester United, in the midst of a rebuild, represents that project.
