Musiala reveals treatable absence seizures after collapsing twice in four days
Jamal Musiala has disclosed he is experiencing "treatable absence seizures" caused by a neurological dysfunction, after collapsing on the pitch during Bayern Munich's matches against RB Leipzig and FC Heidenheim. The 23-year-old says he has medical clearance to continue playing.
Jamal Musiala has revealed he has been diagnosed with “brief, temporary — but treatable — absence seizures” stemming from a neurological dysfunction, after twice collapsing on the pitch within four days.
The 23-year-old Bayern Munich winger fell to the ground just eight minutes after entering as a substitute during a friendly against FC Heidenheim on Tuesday, days after a similar episode during Saturday’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig. In a statement posted to Instagram, Musiala moved to reassure supporters that there is no long-term risk to his health.
“First things first, I am doing well,” he wrote. “I understand that many of you are worried. I would like to put those concerns to rest today and explain the situation: I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary — but treatable — absence seizures resulting from a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the kind of incidents seen recently, such as during the match against Leipzig or the game in Heidenheim.”
Musiala stressed that the decision to continue playing was his own, made in close consultation with medical specialists. “I know they might look alarming at first glance, but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life. I am receiving excellent medical care and remain very optimistic,” he said. “With the medical clearance of the neurologists, I want to continue doing what helps my recovery most: simply living my life and pursuing my passion for playing football. I have taken full responsibility for this decision.”
The Germany international also acknowledged the support of Bayern Munich and his personal network, adding that he feels “very positive” and is “on the right track.” He asked for privacy on the matter, noting he wished to keep it “only with my closest circle, the club, and the medical experts.”
Bayern Munich are next in action on Saturday, when they face Borussia Dortmund in the German Supercup.
