Armed police made multiple arrests outside Atlanta Stadium after England and Argentina fans clashed in the wake of England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat on Wednesday night. Supporters from both nations were filmed squaring up to one another after the final whistle, with officers moving in to detain several individuals. A small group of fans wearing England shirts were placed in handcuffs following the confrontations.
Argentina supporters were also seen clashing with police near the Georgia venue. Videos circulating on social media showed further fighting in Birmingham, London and New York as supporters from both countries came to blows on the night.
The unrest was fuelled in part by Argentina players celebrating their victory by holding up a sign making reference to the Falkland Islands. Argentina vice-president Victoria Villarruel had already inflamed tensions before kick-off with a post on X, writing: “This is not just another match. I’m not going to be politically correct — against the English, it’s always something more. Long live Argentina! Because until our very last breath, we will reclaim what is ours.”
On the pitch, England had levelled through Callum Gordon, who converted Morgan Rogers’ cross nine minutes into the second half. But with six minutes remaining, Lionel Messi provided two assists to put Argentina 2-1 ahead, and England could not find an equaliser. The defeat ended England’s World Cup campaign at the semi-final stage.
