Mourinho's admiration for Mateus Fernandes complicates Man United's £80m pursuit
Manchester United are preparing a bid for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but face competition from Real Madrid, whose newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho holds the 21-year-old in high regard.
Manchester United are set to submit a bid for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this week, but face a significant obstacle in the form of Real Madrid — and their newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho, who is reported to hold the Portugal international in high regard.
Spanish outlet Marca reports that Fernandes is ‘highly regarded’ by Mourinho, with Real Madrid prioritising a midfield signing this summer. The Spanish club confirmed Mourinho’s appointment last week, adding a heavyweight rival to United’s pursuit of a player who had reportedly set his heart on a move to Old Trafford.
The primary sticking point remains the transfer fee. West Ham are demanding around £80 million for Fernandes despite the club’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of the season. United have made clear they will not be held to ransom, with their own valuation falling well short of that figure due to concerns about the 21-year-old’s inexperience at the highest level. United are willing to play a waiting game to secure a deal at a price they consider fair.
Fernandes made 36 Premier League appearances for West Ham last season, contributing three goals and four assists, having previously impressed during a stint at Southampton in the 2024/25 campaign.
Midfield reinforcement has become a priority for manager Michael Carrick as United prepare for a return to Champions League football. The club has already agreed a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, but are seeking an additional central midfielder. United are also monitoring Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who has been linked with Real Madrid and is said to be open to a move.
The summer overhaul of United’s midfield has been accelerated by departures. Casemiro has already left the club, and Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow in the coming months. Kobbie Mainoo, who established himself as a key figure under Carrick in the second half of the season, is expected to be central to the new-look engine room.
