Mourinho targets Calafiori for Real Madrid rebuild after confirming Dumfries and Konaté deals
José Mourinho, set to be confirmed as Real Madrid manager for a second time, has identified Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori as a transfer target. The Portuguese has already agreed deals for Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konaté as he shapes his squad at the Bernabéu.
José Mourinho has identified Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori as a target for Real Madrid, where the Portuguese is expected to be formally confirmed as manager following the club’s presidential election on Sunday, June 7. Mourinho has already agreed deals for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, who carries a £20 million buy-out clause, and Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté, who is set to join on a free transfer.
The pursuit of Calafiori carries a notable backstory: Mourinho was in charge at Roma when the Italian club sold the defender to Basel for just £1.5 million in 2022. Two years later, Arsenal paid £42 million to bring him to north London, and Calafiori has since become a popular figure in the squad, contributing to the club’s first league title in 22 years.
Despite that success, Calafiori’s place in the Arsenal hierarchy is not entirely secure. The 22-year-old was left out of the Champions League final squad, though he was carrying an injury at the time, and the arrival of Piero Hincapié and the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly have added competition at left back and centre half — the two positions Calafiori occupies. Real Madrid are expected to test Arsenal’s resolve over the Italy international this summer window.
Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu has not yet been officially announced, but reports indicate he has signed a three-year contract. The timing of the announcement is tied to the outcome of Real Madrid’s presidential election, in which incumbent Florentino Pérez faces an unusually competitive challenge from Enrique Riquelme.
Pérez offered a hint of what is to come regardless of the election result, telling El Espanyol: “This Thursday I’ll announce my first big signing for next season. Everyone knows my sporting project: having the best players, and carrying on winning.” On the managerial question, he added: “Soon I’ll announce who Real Madrid’s new coach will be, we’ll have more names before Sunday, don’t worry.”
Should Mourinho be confirmed and Calafiori targeted in earnest, Arsenal would face a significant test of their ability to retain a player who has become integral to their style — even as squad depth in his positions has grown.
