José Mourinho has moved swiftly in his second spell as Real Madrid manager, agreeing a £51.7m deal to sign Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella — ending the club’s reported interest in Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori.

Real will pay an initial £47.4m to Chelsea, with a further £4.3m in add-ons. The paperwork is still being finalised, but official confirmation is expected within a week. Cucurella will complete the move once he returns from the 2026 World Cup, where he is aiming to win a second successive major international tournament with Spain.

Chelsea were not actively seeking to sell the 26-year-old, but Cucurella was understood to be keen on leaving Stamford Bridge, and the chance to join Real Madrid proved decisive. The club will still take a loss on the defender, who cost them £63m when he arrived from Brighton in the summer of 2022. He had only signed a contract extension last summer and had three years remaining on the deal.

Mourinho had previously identified Calafiori as a target to strengthen his backline, but the Italian’s injury record and competition for places at Arsenal appear to have influenced the decision to pursue Cucurella instead.

The Cucurella deal is part of a broader overhaul at the Bernabéu following a second consecutive trophyless season — a run that cost Álvaro Arbeloa his job as head coach. Real have also lost David Alaba and Dani Carvajal, whose contracts have expired, leaving the defensive unit in need of significant reinforcement.

Mourinho is also close to securing further additions. Ibrahima Konaté and Bernardo Silva are both reported to be nearing moves to Madrid on free transfers after leaving Liverpool and Manchester City respectively when their contracts expired. Bernardo had long been linked with Barcelona, but now appears set to join Real instead. Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries is also reported to be close to a move to the Spanish capital, with Inter understood to have agreed a fee.
