Calafiori and Guimaraes rescue Arsenal as Gyokeres benching deepens exit fears
Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates, with Riccardo Calafiori's header and a sublime Bruno Guimaraes strike overturning James Justin's opener. Kai Havertz's selection ahead of Viktor Gyokeres again raised fresh questions about the Swedish striker's future at the club.
Arsenal recovered from a goal down to beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates on Saturday, with Riccardo Calafiori and Bruno Guimaraes scoring after the hour mark to inflict Leeds’ first Premier League defeat of the season and lift the Gunners level with Manchester City on 15 points.
James Justin gave Daniel Farke’s side a deserved lead shortly after half-time, capitalising on a laboured Arsenal display in which the hosts dominated possession but created little of note. The Emirates crowd grew visibly frustrated as Leeds — unbeaten in the league heading into the fixture — threatened to extend their impressive start to the campaign.
Mikel Arteta demanded a response and got one. Calafiori headed Arsenal level after the hour, before a slick team move sealed the win: Bukayo Saka found Martin Odegaard, who released Declan Rice, and Rice’s deft flick teed up Guimaraes to fire in a goal of genuine quality. Leeds offered little resistance after that, and Arsenal held on comfortably.
The result, however, was overshadowed by a selection call that is fast becoming a recurring subplot to Arsenal’s season. Viktor Gyokeres, who scored four goals in four appearances for Sweden during the international break, was again left on the bench in favour of Kai Havertz — despite Havertz having managed just 29 minutes for Germany before picking up an injury.
Gyokeres also carries a strong record against Leeds specifically, having scored three times against them last season. The circumstances appeared to set the stage for a first Premier League start of the campaign. Instead, he watched the first hour from the dugout as Arsenal’s attack misfired.
When Arteta did turn to Gyokeres after the 60-minute mark, the introduction carried little of the conviction a player in his position needs. He struggled to impose himself and looked a shadow of the forward who arrived at the Emirates with considerable fanfare just over a year ago — handpicked, according to reports at the time, by Arteta himself as the final piece of his squad.
The irony is difficult to ignore. Arsenal spent the summer publicly pursuing a striker to compete with or replace Gyokeres, and the Swede has now started just once in the league this season. With his confidence visibly sapped and his manager repeatedly preferring alternatives, the clock on his Arsenal career appears to be ticking.
